ANU Archive Item Open Access A glimpse of Perth, Western AustraliaPhotographer: The Hart Co.View of the Barrack Street jetty, waterfront and buildings of Perth seen from an elevated position. The scene is framed by the foliage of various native plants, including eucalypts and possibly banksias. The photograph was probably taken from Mount Eliza and includes the back view of a seated man wearing a boater hat. Mount Eliza is located in Perth Park which was re-named Kings Park in 1901 in honour of the accession of King Edward VII.ANU Archive Item Open Access Mount Eliza and Swan River, Perth, Western AustraliaPhotographer: The Hart Co.View of a complex of buildings on a spit of land by the Swan River, with Perth in the distance. The clock tower of the Town Hall is visible around the center of the city skyline. The Swan Brewery was situated alongside Mounts Bay Road on Point Lewis. The buildings, which include a tall, high roofed structure with dormer windows and a turret, were built in 1838 as mills for timber-cutting as well as flour-grinding. The Steam Mills were later taken over as a convict depot, then used as a tannery, then a restaurant. In 1879 it was acquired by the Swan Brewery Co. who sold it in 1979 for redevelopment.ANU Archive Item Open Access Railway Station, Perth, Western AustraliaPhotographer: The Hart Co.View looking along Wellington Street of area in front of Perth railway station. The scene includes large numbers of people, cyclists and a variety of horsedrawn vehicles. Some of these are four wheeled covered carriages, presumably designed to carry passengers, while other two wheeled carts appear to be used mostly for delivering goods.Tram cables can be seen overhead and there are several conspicuous power and telegraph poles. The railway station was designed by Richard Roach Jewell and built in two stages. The first stage was completed in 1885, but between 1894 and 1898 the structure was considerably extended and remodelled. This photograph was taken before the two two-storeyed wings were added to the central section. The station at this date has a long corrugated iron veranda and a three storey entrance façade that incorporates a large clock. The construction features the brickwork typical of colonial Perth as well as Victorian classical relief decoration on the entablatures.ANU Archive Item Open Access Rocky Bay, Western AustraliaPhotographer: The Hart Co.View looking north, of curving cliffs along the Swan River. The vegetation growing in the pale rocky ground is sparse and low. Various buildings and a large cleared area can be seen on the left. From 1890 onwards these limestone cliffs were quarried for stone which was used to build the Fremantle Harbour moles.ANU Archive Item Open Access Swan River, Perth, Western AustraliaPhotographer: The Hart Co.View of Swan River and shoreline. The scene shows Mounts Bay Road which runs near to the water below the treed cliffs of Kings Park, and the Swan Brewery on Point Lewis. The brewery buildings, which include a tall, high roofed structure with an industrial chimney, were built in 1838 as mills for timber-cutting as well as flour-grinding. The Steam Mills, as they were known, were later taken over as a convict depot, then used as a tannery, then a restaurant. In 1879 the complex was acquired by the Swan Brewery Co. who sold it in 1979 for redevelopment.
