Abstract

View looking along Wellington Street of area in front of Perth railway station. The scene includes large numbers of people, cyclists and a variety of horsedrawn vehicles. Some of these are four wheeled covered carriages, presumably designed to carry passengers, while other two wheeled carts appear to be used mostly for delivering goods.Tram cables can be seen overhead and there are several conspicuous power and telegraph poles.The railway station was designed by Richard Roach Jewell and built in two stages. The first stage was completed in 1885, but between 1894 and 1898 the structure was considerably extended and remodelled. This photograph was taken before the two two-storeyed wings were added to the central section. The station at this date has a long corrugated iron veranda and a three storey entrance façade that incorporates a large clock. The construction features the brickwork typical of colonial Perth as well as Victorian classical relief decoration on the entablatures. Show more
