Solomon Sunaone Mamaloni was an outstanding and controversial politician in Solomon Islands from 1970 until his death in January 2000. Becoming the country’s first chief minister in 1974 at the age of 31, he led Solomon Islands to self-government in January 1976 and subsequently served as prime minister three times— from 1981 to 1983, 1989 to 1993, and 1994 to 1997. Solomon Islands has suffered many problems and crises during and since Mamaloni’s time, including the Tension from 1998–2003. It would be easy to attribute most of the responsibility for these to the style of politics that ‘Solo’ practised and inspired in others, but both need to be understood in context. ‘Solo’ was a product of complex traditional societies, changing rapidly as the islands moved from colonial rule to independence, situated in an even more complex and rapidly changing post-war global environment. By taking into account these historical and structural forces, this biography seeks to arrive at a fuller understanding of Solomon Mamaloni—his life, career, legacy, and country.en_AU
