The paper describes a large scale separation in a rarefied hypersonic flow of moderate Reynolds number and moderate density, where both DSMC and N-S simulations are compared with some experimental data. The particular configuration chosen for the study is the so called leading edge separation, first conceived by Chapman. The agreement of data between different codes and their validation with experiments is shown and discussed.en
This research was supported by the Australian research Council (ARC) through the Discovery Grant DP-140100842, to whom we express our sincere thanks. We are also grateful to the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) for their generous support. Grateful thanks are also due to Dr. Michael Gallis of sandier National Laboratory, USA, in the use of DSMC code SPARTA and to Professor Graham Candler of the University of Minnesota for the use of his code US3D.en
