Abstract
The stony and sandridge desert near
Olympic Dam in South Australia is
generating interesting archaeological
and palaeoenvironmental results
and offers opportunity for additional
research in several fields. BHP
Billiton has supported a researchbased salvage program to mitigate
the impacts of a proposed mine
expansion. The program covers
archaeological investigations
within a landscape context and has
revealed interesting Quaternary
geoarchaeological information.
This note outlines the scope and
general findings of the program and
suggests there is a range of possible
Quaternary research that could
follow from the information gained
in the salvage phase.
