Abstract

Struggling to integrate gender, sexuality, race and cross-cultural perspectives, historians have been searching for new ways to write histories of nation. Transnational perspectives of intermarriage on colonising frontiers, such as the path-breaking works of Kat Ellinghaus, Taking Assimilation to Heart (2006), and Damon Salesa, Racial Crossings: Race, Intermarriage and the Victorian British Empire (2011), have demonstrated how marriage provides an enlightening site of colonial and imperial intersection.
