Abstract

Equilibrium charge-state distributions of Si and S ions with energies between 84 and 237 MeV were measured after passage through iron and gadolinium targets. Knowledge of these exit charge distributions is critical for interpreting g-factor measurements on exotic nuclei produced as radioactive beams. The data for both targets are in agreement with the empirical parameterization of the mean charge state proposed recently by Schiwietz and Grande. The distribution widths are in agreement with the formula of Baudinet-Robinet.
