Abstract

This is a re-release of a world premiere recording made in 2002, published originally in The Australian Album (Artworks AW034, re-released on ABC Classics in 2019, 0028948178933), of the Sonata for Violin and Piano of Dulcie Holland (1913-2000). For many years, Dulcie Holland was neglected as a composer, her works viewed uncritically as anachronistic, yet more recently her works have generated sustained interest. The original recording of this work was one of the first to assess her larger chamber music works, and its re-release in this CD has broadened its dissemination to wider audiences. The re-release amounts to a new adaptation of the recording, benefitting gender diversity among composers, and highlighting the cultural significance of an earlier generation of Australian composers.
