Regulating Fair Play in Sport

Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the contemporary regulation of fair play in sport. It discusses how critical criminological analyses illuminate important relationships between inequality, representation, and social control, which scholars in many other fields have overlooked or under-theorized. Using the regulation of drugs and sex in sport as grounding examples, the chapter explores how fair play is being policed in sport and how these practices contribute to constructions of crime and deviance. It pays particular attention to how critical criminologists attend to issues of power underpinning sports-related crime and deviance. The chapter concludes with a discussion of how sport is a growing—and important—domain of critical criminological inquiry.
