Abstract
If the main reason for studying history is to learn from the past to avoid repeating mistakes, can Taiwans Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement since 1966 provide us with any inspiration or warning for Chinas recent cultural renaissance and ritual reconstruction? Using official archival materials and newspaper reports as the main sources of data, this paper explores cultural activities related to the music and dance of the Confucius ritual performances during the era of Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement. On the one hand, the study aims to reveal the influence of the Movement on the musical development of Taiwan. Through the discussion of the Confucius music and dance reconstruction, on the other hand, it also assists us to clarify the purpose and consequence of its reconstruction, as well as the relationships between them.
