Abstract
‘At a rate of knots’ is made with moving clock hands physically connected with string. As time passes, the clocks’ motion becomes distorted as the strings tangle, resulting in unpredictable formations of the work. Because the second, minute and hour hands each behave differently, the work explores a sense of both fast and slow time. While constantly changing over a period of weeks, some elements appear still at the time of viewing.
The work plays with the notion of time being individual, but also unavoidably connected to the time of others. Through a physical manifestation of tension, tangling, twisting and discontinuity of what we normally perceive as constant, it evokes how the construct of measured time becomes abstracted through personal experience. Exhibited on 20/08/2016.
