A Distant Land Research Background There is very little fiction exploring Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, the longest in our history. This research, a published novel By Alison Booth entitled A Distant Land, is the third in the Jingera Trilogy. It explores themes thrown up by that war of death, family and identity. Research Contribution The novel A Distant Land by Alison Booth addresses issues of loss and identity through a narrative presenting the perspectives of three characters. The novel thereby creates a multi-faceted but at the same time emotionally challenging narrative, which encompasses themes of grief and identity in 1970s Australia. Research Significance The significance of this research lies in its exploration of the devastation caused by war, and of the impact of ASIO activities and conscription on people’s lives. Its value is attested to by the following indicators: interviews on radio (Podcast interview on 4ZZZ Brisbane ‘Bookclub' with Sky Kirkham, 19 July 2012; Podcast interview on 'Published orNot' with Jan Goldsmith, 3CR Radio, 28 June 2012; Interview for Australian Literature Review, 21 November 2012; interview with Jeanavive McGregor, Radio 2SER, 23 July 2012); invitations to conduct writing retreats; and the book review in the Canberra Times.
