Abstract
The World Health Organization Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) shone a global spotlight on the inequities in health that exist within and between countries at the start of the 21st century. It put health equity, social justice and empowerment of individuals, communities and countries at the heart of its concern. Between 2005 and 2008 the CSDH brought together evidence and made recommendations on what could be done to achieve better and more fairly distributed health worldwide through action specifically in the social determinants (1).
