dc.description.abstractThis chapter examines the potential healing role of direct democracy in settling severely disruptive inter-communal conflicts. Drawing on examples from around the globe, the authors argue that a well-designed referendum process, structured to produce meaningful deliberation, can help a badly divided society find peaceful and lasting solutions to internal differences.
