Abstract

This is a book about the impulse to conserve. In a time of rapid global change, it considers what we want to conserve in our landscapes, our communities and our lives. The Desert Channels region is at the heart of this book, but we offer more than just a history and natural history of a large arid region in south-western Queensland. Conservation demands that we assess what we value about a place – its biodiversity, its human history, its resources, its community. Each of these defines the edges of the ‘place’ differently.
