This material is based on an oral history interview by Sang Ye, edited and translated by Geremie R. Barmé, and undertaken as part of an Australian Research Council-funded Federation Fellowship project on 'The Spectacle of Beijing'. The translator would like to acknowledge Linda Jaivin's extensive work in helping revise this text.
