Abstract

This video shows a demo of MetaTravels, a touch-screen musical instrument app for iPad. MetaTravels is a prototype touch-screen musical instrument designed for a process of rehearsal-as-research with Ensemble Metatone, a quartet of percussionists. This app allows the performers to play with field recordings and samples using percussive gestures on the touch-screen. Taps play short sounds, while swirls and swipes play continuous sounds. The app includes a palette of sounds which the performer can cycle through using the reset button. A looping function and three algorithmic sound generators are also included. MetaTravels was used in a series of performances by Ensemble Metatone throughout 2013.
