The 1960s saw a boom in the Australian mining industry unparalleled since the gold rushes of last century. The seventies have, by comparison been less dramatic, but the world concern with energy offers the prospect of another boom. This book examines the policy problems with which the minerals and energy sector confronts Australian governments - such as taxation, environment protection, Aboriginal land rights, foreign investment, the development of an integrated energy policy, the encouragement of local processing of minerals before export, and the role of government. Clearly and objectively this book puts into perspective the operations and the importance of the mining and energy sector, operations that have frequently been the subject of heated controversy. It is essential reading for the intelligent reader seeking a balanced view of this important industry.en_AU
