Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

Abstract

The five years' earmarked funding by the Research School of Pacific [and Asian] studies for ECHOSEA came to its allotted end in 1994. This is therefore the moment to look back and reflect on what has been achieved and what remains to be done. 21 different authors have been commissioned to write major volumes for the new Macmillan Economic History of Southeast Asia. Of these, three are tenured members of the Research School, and two others obtained appointments in the Project - Dr Anne Booth as Senior Research Fellow (1989-91) and Dr Pierre van der Eng as Post Doctoral Fellow (1992-93). Both these scholars left before their full term - Dr Booth to a chair at SOAS in London, and Dr van der Eng to a Lectureship in the Faculty of Economics, ANU.
