Abstract

My students get very confused about the motions of objects in space. I blame Hollywood. Movies like Star Warsshow spacecraft with wings banking and turning just like aeroplanes, and asteroid films like Armageddon tell us that any asteroid that ‘leaves its orbit’ is dangerously unstable and sure to hit the Earth. This is a shame, as motions in space are a clean illustration of Newton’s laws in action.
