Abstract

This study aims to examine power within and behind Rongga language, Mbasa Wini, in the contemporary East Manggarai context. To achieve this goal, the researchers use qualitative method. Data are collected by ethnographic approach through interview and documentation. Furthermore, the data are analyzed by socio-ethnolinguistic approach. This study finds that linguistically, there is a specific unit in the form of archaic poetic ritual speech in rhyme patterns with a high degree of difficulty in form and rhythm. Ethnolinguistically, there is a message/meaning which is full of socio-cultural values and ethnic knowledge, especially related to power. Power relations and ritual languageare built naturally through a number of quality personas by gaining recognition/legitimacy on the position of the social hierarchy such as the ability, skills, and sensitivity in the mastery of indigenous knowledge. In other words, the ritual language, mbasa wini, has a social elevation effect, being important linguistic capital for power, and conversely power sustains the power of linguistic capitalitself. The results of this study are expected to be beneficial for studies on ethnic minorities, especially on how this symbiosis occurs in small languages that are getting marginalized.
