Australia, India and the United States: The challenge of forging new alignments in the Indo Pacific

Abstract

India is emerging as a key Indo-Pacific partner for Australia and the United States: India is becoming an important security partner for the United States across the Indo-Pacific. India is likely to become a major security partner for Australia in the Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia. In engaging with India, Australia will need to work outside its normal comfort zone of security partnerships, having regard to India’s unique strategic perspectives and traditions. Australia will increasingly need to consider how its relationship with India fits with the ANZUS alliance and the US-led alliance system.
