Abstract

We introduce the concept of multiband phase transitions between photonic crystals and all-dielectric metamaterials. We consider periodic photonic structures composed of identical dielectric cylinders arranged in a two-dimensional square lattice. At large value of refraction, such structures can display negative magnetic permeability for the TE-polarization due to the Mie resonances which occur below the lowest Bragg resonance. We define a transition from photonic crystals to multiband metamaterials when two Mie bands splits off the lowest Bragg band creating two bands in the energy spectrum with negative magnetic permeability.
