Abstract

Conventional medicine, geared to treating and supporting potentially reversible conditions with a survival goal, can often lead to dehumanisation of the intensive care unit (ICU). Complementary therapies, when used in conjunction with conventional medicine in the ICU, may have a role in improving the patient journey. Music-and animal-assisted interventions have a promising role in improving the psychophysiological condition of the patients, offering a more human being-centred approach.
