Abstract

A multimode, semiclassical model of a continuously pumped atom laser was presented. It was found that the system was unstable below a critical scattering length for a spatially independent coupling process. The study on the model also showed that the atom laser was stable to a finite number of modes and could induce single-mode operation for a spatially dependent pumping.
