Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

This is an extract, slightly adapted, from Submission 82 (Angelo, 2013) which focused particularly on how the 'high stakes', competitive climate generated by NAPLAN affects the teaching and learning of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (henceforth Indigenous) students who are learners of English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D) or as a foreign language (EFL). The object of this submission was to inform decision makers of the ramifications of NAPLAN for the Indigenous EAL/D cohort 'at the coal-face', that is, in their classrooms and schools.en_AU
