Abstract
This introduction establishes riot and riot studies as contexts for the analysis of Shakespearean drama and performance. It raises questions about the understanding and depiction of riot in early modern drama and about the provocation of riot in Shakespearean performance contexts to demonstrate how studies of Shakespeare and early modern drama might inform and be productively informed by fresh
conceptualisations of riot.
