Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

This article argues that the much publicised lack of knowledge of and interest in Indonesia in Australia is a consequence of the lack of Indonesian content in the Australian school and university curriculum. It argues that the study of Indonesian history should be prioritised within the discipline in Australian schools and universities. In a crowded curriculum with competing priorities, it is pertinent to ask: Why Indonesia? Why the history curriculum? This article seeks to answer these important questions, but to begin I have written a personal story to provide an example of how many young Australians come to see Indonesia.
