dc.description.abstract | This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines Japan in Australia through the lens of cultural fusion, exploring the changing cultural landscape of Australia as more Japanese culture began to filter into the Australian consciousness. It explores the historical context of Australian artists such as Lionel Lindsay and Violet Teague who experimented with Japonisme as a platform for expressive experimentation. The book discusses the role of sport in re-establishing relations postwar and the role played by the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the 1954 Baseball Tour of Australia by the Yomiuri Giants in helping to promote a positive connection between Australia and Japan. It describes cultural fusion through the literary landscape. The book explains issues of identity and intercultural relations through an examination of academic engagement with trans-Asia approaches. | |
