In 2015, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) caused >100 000 Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases and 25 000 deaths worldwide.1 Although most JEV infections are mild or asymptomatic, ~ 4% progress to severe disease and could have devastating consequences.2 Among those who develop encephalitis, case-fatality rate (~30%) and permanent neurological and psychological sequelae (~30–50%) are high.
