Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

In this chapter, I attend Halberstam's notion that the traces or scars of old Monsters live on in contemporary examples and also move into the future, by analysing Hairies in the Australian two season series Cleverman (Griffen, 2016-2017) and Pangkarlangu in central Australia. I read both along the lines of the 'Indigenous Uncanny' as proposed by Faye Ginsburg (2018), proposing that Hairies are not 'just' monsters in the most general sense of the term but rather that they are 'for First Nations people' relatable others.en_AU
