Abstract

THE conclusion that there might be some link between the motor transmitter substance and nicotinic acid in Crustacea appeared in a paper by VAN DER KLWT (1960). The basis of VAN DER KLOOT’S suggestion was that a substance (Factor S) in extracts of crayfish and lobster excited nerve-muscle preparations of the same animal in a way that would be expected of a neuromuscular transmitter, and gave the characteristic reactions of a derivative of nicotinamide on paper chromatography. He also showed that radioactively-labelled nicotinic acid, previously injected into a crayfish, produced, on subsequently chromatogrammed extracts, a peak of radioactivity which had the same R, value as the above physiologically active compound.
