Abstract
With the publication of this book, Mary McEwen, a daughter-in-law of its subject, offers a first biographical essay on the life and work of a dedicated public servant, a distinguished non-aca- demic scholar of Polynesia and, particularly, New Zealand Ma¯ori, and a respected practitioner of the latter’s arts of carving, composition, and performance. In doing so, she also provides a variety of insights into government relations with and policies on Ma¯ori and New Zealand’s sub-colonial empire, into Ma¯ori and Pacific aspirations and initiatives, and into one Pa¯keha¯’s absorption in the Ma¯ori world.
