Abstract

The demand for energy has led to a rapid increase in coal production, and the impact of coal mining in changing the environmental and social landscapes has been spectacular in eastern India. This ‘kingdom of coal’—a blighted & scarred landscape devoid of any shades of green unforeseen in tribal-dominated tracts - has come into existence at tremendous human costs. Expanding coal mines have pauperised thousands, so far unparalled in the world.
