The three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (3DF) is being used to monitor color and fading. 3DF spectra allow the quantitative measurement of color, which among other things helps pigment matching for retouching damaged paintings and monitoring color changes such as fading. This technique may be used to identify fluorescent dyes, pigments, and binding media based on their characteristic spectra. This technique is proving to be a new and important field of study, and it is hoped it can be applied more widely to the arts in the future.
