Abstract

It is a well-established empirical proposition that major structural changes occur during, and are driven by, the process of socio-economic development. The most important of these changes relates to the changing structure of the economy - the shift of economic activity out of the agricultural sector and into the industrial and service sectors. This process occurs in one form or another in practically every economy that has experienced rising per capita income.
