Abstract
The number of Australian tourists to Japan has skyrocketed in recent years and reached more than half a million visitors in 2018. Typical tourism advertisements in Australia often feature Mt Fuji, cherry blossoms and geishas, with occasional shinkansen (high speed) trains. In light of the persistence of these clichéd images of Japan, what can photographs tell us about the interrelationship between the two countries?
