Abstract

In early September 2016, the death of Asia Ramazan Antar, a 19-year-old female combatant from the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units, was widely reported in the media. Ironically, Asia became famous on social media for her beautiful face and sexualised representation of a combatant woman similar to that of Angelina Jolie in the film Lara Croft. She was nicknamed the ‘Kurdish Angelina Jolie’.
