Cultural advice

The Australian National University acknowledges, celebrates and pays our respects to the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people of the Canberra region and to all First Nations Australians on whose traditional lands we meet and work, and whose cultures are among the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that ANU Library collections may include images, names, voices, and other representations of deceased persons.

Material in the collection may contain terms, language or views that reflect the period in which the item was created and may be considered inappropriate today.

In the investigation of the absorption (pr emission) of a gamma ray by a nucleus, a number of nuclear models have been proposed which can describe the process. A collective model of Goldhaver and Teller (Go 48) is a classical hydrodynamic model which assumes the protons to be moving in opposite directions to the neutrons in a nucleus, the gamma ray energy being stored in the form of a dipole vibration. This is essentially a compound nucleus description of absorption, In the model of Wilkinson (Wi 56) which is based on the independent particle model, a nucleon absorbs the gamma ray energy and moves to a higher shell, eventually sharing its energy by collision with other nucleons or escaping from the nucleus before this energy distribution can take place.en_AU
