Abstract

In the investigation of the absorption (pr emission) of a gamma ray by a nucleus, a number of nuclear models have been proposed which can describe the process. A collective model of Goldhaver and Teller (Go 48) is a classical hydrodynamic model which assumes the protons to be moving in opposite directions to the neutrons in a nucleus, the gamma ray energy being stored in the form of a dipole vibration. This is essentially a compound nucleus description of absorption, In the model of Wilkinson (Wi 56) which is based on the independent particle model, a nucleon absorbs the gamma ray energy and moves to a higher shell, eventually sharing its energy by collision with other nucleons or escaping from the nucleus before this energy distribution can take place.
