Before economic reform, economists rarely played any important roles in the decision-making process of China’s economy. This paper discusses the change of roles and professional capacity building of the Chinese economists in response to the challenges of economic reform, how economists have influenced the decision-making process of reform, Chinese economists’ special roles in promoting pro-reform social consciousness and undertakes an analytical review of institutional constraints and historical circumstances limiting the roles that Chinese economists have played in economic reform from an international perspective.en_US
