Abstract

In this article, Jayne Regan presents two contrasting postwar visions for the future of Australia. William Hatfield advocated large-scale hydroengineering projects that would irrigate the arid inland of the continent and bring prosperity and security to its rural inhabitants. Pacifist Flexmore Hudson promoted local knowledge of nature as part of an intellectual movement of world-mindedness. The article shows postwar Australia at a moment of global concern and reorientation.
