Abstract
The article discusses the target language competence as well as the level of language proficiency required for the EFL teachers at secondary training institutions in Vietnam where to date there has been no specific or comprehensive assessment of the training quality of the graduates from teacher training colleges throughout the country. Likewise most of the teacher training institutions are prone to focus on equipping students with the linguistic knowledge and English competency for general purposes which are often either context-independent or good for all contexts other than on attending to the needs of and the characteristics of the English used by the teachers-to-be. From the pedagogical communication points of view, the paper argues that English as a language for specific purposes is not only the target studied but also an effective communication tool for all the EFL Teacher Training Programs at tertiary levels. The paper concludes by giving out a number of implications as solutions to the implementation of 'The National Project on Enhancing The Qualities of Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages 2008-2020 at various levels', in light of The English for Specific Purposes Training Approach.
