Memory Across Borders: Film, Colonialism and the Cold War 越境する記憶—映画・植民地主義・冷戦

Abstract

This chapter re-examines the history of the mass re-settlement of ethnic Koreans from Japan to North Korea (1959-1984) by exploring the way in which this mass movement of people has been represented in visual media. Going back to the 1960s, I examine the relatively positive representation of the migration in contemporary popular film, and contrast this with the darker pictures presented in recent films and TV documentaries. I also explore the way in which varying styles of film production open up or foreclose the possibility of deeper debate on the meaning and consequences of the mass migration. - Tessa Morris Suzuki Show more
