Abstract

Clusters (<10 nm) with dimensions between molecules and nanoparticles are emerging materials with enormous potential, mainly for catalytic applications. They behave like superatoms, with exciting sizes and facet-dependent and dynamic intrinsic properties. They also have showed improved activity for a variety of electrochemical applications, including water splitting, CO 2 reduction reaction, and N 2 reduction reaction. In this chapter, we aim to discuss the clusters in terms of their unique physicochemical properties, cluster size effects, cluster composition, cluster-support interactions, and various recent advances in electrochemical energy conversion applications. Moreover, we will discuss the existing challenges and future prospects of enhancing the performance of cluster-based electrocatalysts.
