Abstract
The experience of serious illness or injury can have far-reaching consequences for both the individual and the community. At a personal level, disease impacts may
range from temporary discomfort through to a permanent disability affecting any or all aspects of an individual’s life, including perception of self and the nature of relationships
with others, the ability to participate in society in a way that is fulfilling and, in the worst case scenario, the capacity to manage basic tasks necessary for
day-to-day independent living. At a population level, the effects of disease may be measured in increased rates of morbidity and mortality and reductions in average
lifespan, with repercussions for political stability, economic performance, cultural activity, social practice and social relations.
