Abstract

Art in the industrialised western world spent the 1980s trying on a variety of Emperor's New Clothes, progressively dematerialising the practice; theorising, hybridising, politicising, socialising and technologising the actual, physical work of art into a kind of oblivion. It is perhaps not surprising that fashion, which is nothing if not material, should have found itself a place in art's empty wardrobe. Indeed, one of the most interesting developments in contemporary culture in recent years has been the way in which these two great industries of visuality have converged.
