Abstract
This chapter introduces the volume and defines monsters as embodiments of cultural moments. It proposes different avenues for the investigation of how monsters and change intersect: (1) emergence, (2) adaptation, (3) appropriation, (4) amalgamation, (5) extinction, and (6) succession. It contours approaches from anthropology and monster studies for each of these, as well as bringing together contrasting examples. It highlights the insights to be gained by analysing processes of change from a vantage point of monstrous transformation.
