Abstract
I am a sociologist of education with expertise in studies of gender and sexuality.
This angle of scrutiny (Harwood, 2006) is my point of departure in conversations
about schooling and religion. From this angle, I do believe that schooling and
religion can be incredibly powerful in creating community. I am also clear that
schooling and religion can be corrosive in relation to the development of community.
Being clear that both these things are possible is an important tension to
sustain, I think, in conversations about religion and schooling.
