Abstract
Tambiah (1990) has deconstructed the history of the opposition of reason and science to magic. He argues that it was during the Enlightenment that a fundamental divide between prayer and spell was established, the former coming to be seen as characteristic of religion and the latter of magic (Tambiah 1990, p. 19).
